Travel Like a Local in Dominica: Meet the Author Behind the Guide

Rashida V. Serrant-Davis

When you visit Dominica, the difference between a typical trip and a meaningful one often comes down to one thing. Who you are learning from.

That is exactly why I created the Travel Like a Local series. Instead of writing about destinations from the outside, I work directly with people who live there, people who understand the culture, the pace, and the everyday reality of the island.

For Dominica, that local voice is Rashida V. Serrant-Davis.

How This Book Was Created

The book Travel Like a Local – Dominica: 50 Travel Tips from a Local is not written from research alone. It is built through collaboration.

I work one-on-one with each author to shape their knowledge into something that is actually useful for travelers. That means taking real, lived experience and turning it into practical advice you can use before you go.

The focus is not on listing attractions. It is on helping you understand how to move through a destination with more confidence and fewer surprises.

Why a Local Author Matters

A local perspective changes everything.

A guidebook written from the outside might tell you where to go. A local tells you when it is worth going, when it is not, and what most visitors misunderstand.

This is especially important in Dominica, where timing, weather, and travel distances can completely change your day. What looks simple online can feel very different once you arrive.

Meet the Author: Rashida V. Serrant-Davis

Picture1

Rashida Serrant-Davis is a child of God, a wife, a mother of three, an author, speaker, and teacher. A first-generation American, she was born in New York City as the only Yankee in a Dominican household.

Her path has taken her far beyond where she started. She has lived as an expatriate in the Caribbean for eight years and currently resides in Dominica. Prior to that, she lived in Sangre Grande, Trinidad, giving her a broader understanding of Caribbean life.

With a background in the hospitality industry and experience traveling to and living in 16 countries, Rashida brings a perspective that blends global awareness with local reality.

What makes her approach different is how she travels. She focuses on discovering what exists beyond guided tours. That same mindset shapes this book, giving you an insider look at Dominica that reflects how the island actually feels, not just how it is marketed.

You may even meet Rashida in the local market when cruise ships arrive, sharing her knowledge directly with visitors.

Why I Chose This Author

When I look for authors for the Travel Like a Local series, I am not looking for someone who can simply list places to visit. I am looking for someone who understands how travelers actually experience a destination.

That is why I chose Rashida V. Serrant-Davis.

What stood out immediately was her ability to see Dominica from both perspectives. She understands what visitors expect when they arrive, but she also understands what the island is really like day to day.

Her background in hospitality, her experience living throughout the Caribbean, and the fact that she interacts directly with travelers when cruise ships come into Dominica gives her insight that goes beyond surface-level recommendations.

She knows what questions people ask when they first arrive. She knows where they hesitate. She knows what they wish they had done differently.

My role is to take that real, local knowledge and shape it into something you can actually use before you go. Her role is to make sure what you are reading reflects what it feels like to be there.

That combination is what makes this guide different.
