Knoebels Amusement Resort is one of those places that reminds me why meaningful travel does not always require a plane ticket or an elaborate itinerary. Located in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, Knoebels combines classic amusement park rides, family traditions, food, swimming, games, and a wooded setting that feels different from a large corporate theme park.
I have visited Knoebels with my family during different seasons and at different stages of my children’s lives. We have ridden the rides, walked around the park, spent time in the arcade, cooled off at Crystal Pool, enjoyed plenty of park food, and returned for fall visits.
On one visit, I enjoyed a Dole Whip, which has become one of my favorite summer treats. Sometimes a simple moment like eating something you enjoy while your family explores the park becomes one of the memories that stays with you.
Why Knoebels Is Different
Knoebels describes itself as America’s largest free-admission amusement park. Parking, admission, entertainment, and picnic facilities are free. Visitors can purchase individual ride tickets or choose a Ride All Day Pass when passes are available.
This arrangement gives families more flexibility than they may have at an amusement park where everyone must purchase admission. A grandparent who wants to watch the children ride, a family member who only enjoys a few attractions, or someone who simply wants to walk around and eat does not have to purchase a full-price admission ticket.
Before visiting, check the current Knoebels calendar, hours, and pricing. Ride passes are not offered every day, and operating schedules can change throughout the season.
Decide How Your Family Will Pay for Rides
One of the most important decisions is whether to buy ticket books or Ride All Day Passes.
A Ride All Day Pass may make sense for someone who plans to ride frequently. Ticket books can work better for younger children, adults who only want to ride a few attractions, or families who want to divide their day among rides, food, games, and swimming.
Think realistically about how many rides each person will use. The best choice does not have to be the same for every member of your group.
Make a Plan for Groups With Different Ages
Our recent visit included a larger group with children of different ages and adults who did not all want to do the same things. That can make the day more complicated, especially when you are trying to keep everyone together.
I learned that it helps to decide before arriving whether the group will stay together or divide into smaller groups. Older children may want roller coasters and the arcade, while younger children need kiddie rides, food breaks, and a slower pace.
Choose a meeting place and a meeting time. This gives everyone more freedom without spending the day trying to make one plan work for every person.
A family outing does not have to be perfectly optimized to be worthwhile. Our day was not completely efficient, and we spent more than I originally intended. However, we still went, tried different things, and made memories together. That mattered more than creating a perfect schedule.
Leave Time for Classic Knoebels Rides
Knoebels is known for a mix of thrill rides, family attractions, and traditional amusement park experiences.
Phoenix and Twister are two of the park’s well-known wooden roller coasters. Families can also find classic attractions such as the Grand Carousel, train rides, bumper cars, and the Haunted Mansion.
Do not feel pressured to experience every ride during one visit. Let each person choose one or two priorities and build the day around those choices. Leaving some attractions for another visit gives you a reason to return.
Budget Separately for the Arcade and Games
The arcade can easily become a major part of a Knoebels visit, especially for older children. My family has spent plenty of time standing together, playing games, and enjoying the energy of the arcade.
If your children enjoy games, decide on an arcade budget before entering. Treat the arcade, midway games, rides, food, and swimming as separate parts of the budget. It is much easier to control spending when everyone knows approximately how much is available for each activity.
Make Food Part of the Experience
Food is one of the reasons many people look forward to visiting Knoebels. Instead of rushing through lunch, allow time to explore the different options and let everyone choose something they will enjoy.
A Dole Whip is one of my favorite Knoebels treats. It is refreshing on a warm Pennsylvania day and has become part of the experience for me.
Knoebels also allows families to use its picnic facilities. Bringing food can help manage costs, accommodate dietary needs, and make feeding a large group easier. You can combine a packed meal with one special park treat instead of purchasing every meal and snack inside.
Consider Visiting Crystal Pool
Crystal Pool can turn a Knoebels trip into more than a day of rides. We have enjoyed swimming as part of our visits, especially when the weather is hot.
Pool admission is separate from amusement park rides, so include it in your schedule and budget. Swimming can take up a significant part of the day. If the pool is one of your priorities, you may not need as many ride tickets or a full day of rides.

Slow Down and Notice the Setting
One of the best parts of Knoebels is simply walking around. The park’s trees, shaded areas, traditional rides, food stands, and family atmosphere give it a personality of its own.
You do not have to rush from attraction to attraction. Sit down with a snack, watch the carousel, walk through the park, or allow the children extra time in the arcade. These slower moments often become just as memorable as the biggest rides.
Visit During More Than One Season
Knoebels is not only a summer destination. We have also enjoyed a fall family visit, when the atmosphere and surrounding Pennsylvania scenery felt different from a hot summer day.
Seasonal hours and available attractions vary, so always check the official schedule. A fall visit can be a wonderful choice for families who enjoy cooler temperatures and seasonal decorations.
Lisa’s Family Food and Money-Saving Tips for Visiting Knoebels
When I recently visited Knoebels with a larger family group, one of the most stressful parts was trying to figure out what everyone wanted to eat while also watching how much we were spending. The good news is that Knoebels gives families more flexibility than most amusement parks. You can bring your own food, eat inside the park, or combine the two. These tips can help you enjoy the food without spending more than you planned.
- Make a food plan before arriving
Decide whether you will pack every meal, buy all your food at Knoebels, or use a combination of both. For many families, the best balance is bringing lunch and drinks, purchasing pizza or another shared meal for dinner, and allowing everyone to choose one special treat.
- Bring a cooler into Knoebels
Unlike many amusement parks, Knoebels allows visitors to bring coolers and their own food. Glass containers and alcohol are not permitted. Pack sandwiches, fruit, chips, snacks, juice pouches, and plenty of cold drinks. This can make a significant difference when feeding a larger family. - Use the picnic tables and pavilions
Knoebels has numerous picnic tables and shaded pavilions near the park. Pavilion space can also be reserved for free based on availability. - Use a cooler with wheels or bring a wagon
The picnic area is close to the main parking lot, but you may still have a lot to carry. A cooler with wheels or a wagon makes transporting food, drinks, paper products, and extra clothing much easier. Vehicles are not permitted in the pavilion area, so plan to move everything from the parking lot yourself.
- Pack a simple meal that works for everyone
Sandwiches are one of the easiest options for a large group. Bring lunch meat, cheese, a couple of loaves of bread, individual bags of chips, fruit, and drinks. Keeping the meal simple also reduces the amount of preparation and cleanup required.
Some local visitors suggest checking Amish and independent markets such as L&L Marketplace, Wenger’s Grocery Outlet, or Davy’s Fresh Market if one is along your route. Prices and hours can change, so check before making a special stop.
- Bring drinks to reduce small purchases
Drinks can quietly add a large amount to the cost of feeding a family. Bring water, juice pouches, and other permitted beverages in your cooler. Visitors also report being able to request free cups of ice water at some food stands, although availability and cup sizes may vary. Bringing refillable water bottles is still the safer plan.
- Consider breakfast at the International Food Court
The International Food Court is open daily for breakfast and offers reasonably priced à la carte items, sandwiches, and complete breakfast specials. The 2026 menu includes several breakfast combinations priced under $8. It can be a practical option for campers or families who arrive early. - Share whole pizzas instead of ordering separate meals
Pizza was one of the most frequently recommended meals for feeding a group inside Knoebels. Ordering one or two whole pizzas is often easier and less expensive than allowing everyone to order an individual meal, drink, and side. Bring your own drinks and share the pizza at a picnic table to keep the total lower.
- Look for meals at the International Food Court, Round Stand, and Oasis Cafeteria
The International Food Court offers American, Polish, Mexican, and other choices, making it useful when family members want different foods. The Round Stand is known for items such as pierogies, tri-taters, and cheesesteaks.
The Oasis Cafeteria offers rotating specials that may include barbecue chicken, all-you-can-eat spaghetti, build-your-own tacos, and a Friday fish fry. - Save part of the budget for Knoebels treats
Even if you pack your meals, leave room in the budget for something that feels special. Popular choices mentioned by regular visitors include funnel cake, cotton candy, caramel apple chips, frozen lemonade, and ice cream.
Old Mill Ice Cream is a favorite for hand-dipped cones, sundaes, banana splits, ice cream waffles, and milkshakes. Choosing one treat per person lets everyone enjoy part of the Knoebels food experience without purchasing every meal inside the park.
- Compare ride tickets with a Ride All Day Pass
Do not automatically buy a Ride All Day Pass for every person. Ticket Books can be shared among family members, are available every operating day, and unused ride tickets do not expire. They may be the better choice for adults, younger children, or anyone who only plans to ride a few attractions.
Ride All Day Passes may provide better value for children and adults who intend to ride repeatedly, but they are only offered on certain days. Use the current Knoebels ride pricing page to estimate the cost based on how many rides each person will realistically use.
- Ask about discounts when buying a large amount of ride tickets
Families and groups purchasing a large quantity of ride tickets may qualify for discounted ticket packages. Current group information lists discounts beginning with purchases of $200 or more, but requirements can change. Contact Knoebels or the Group Planning Center before assuming the discount will apply to your family.
- Use the free attractions to stretch the day
Knoebels has free admission, free parking, and a selection of free attractions. Families can visit the Knoebels History Museum, Carousel Museum, Americana exhibit, Bald Eagle Habitat, and Kozmo’s Play Area without using ride tickets. Availability can vary, so consult the Knoebels attractions list for your date. They have a free lighthouse puppet show, sometimes a band plays, and seeing the swan in the stream.

Is Knoebels Worth Visiting?
For my family, the answer is yes. Knoebels offers enough variety for children, teenagers, parents, and grandparents to enjoy the same destination in different ways.
The day may not go exactly as planned. Not everyone will want the same food or rides, and a larger group may need to separate for part of the visit. That is okay. Travel does not have to be perfectly efficient to be meaningful.

Where to stay with a group?
We have stayed in the pink morrow castle you can see from the train. It did feel moldy and not luxury but now having to drive or walk far was amazing!! Inside Morro Castle at Knoebels | Cabin Tour & Where to Stay
The last visit we stayed at Bloomsburg at the Comfort Inn and Suites. Big rooms with a couch for extra sleeping. There was mold in the bathtub but it is very close to Walmart and Thrift Stores if you forgot something.
What to eat at Knoebels?
Lisa’s favorite meal at the park. Pulled pork on a baked (or sweet potato) bbq sauce, and an ice coffee. My family loves the tri-tadders, and the hard ice cream too. Also, dole whip!
