Visiting Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania by Train in the Fall

There is something different about arriving in a town by train instead of pulling into a parking lot. When I visited Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania by train in the fall, the train ride was not simply transportation. It became part of the experience.

Jim Thorpe is especially beautiful when the mountains begin changing colors. Arriving by rail gives you a chance to enjoy the scenery before you even start exploring town. It also means you can step off the train near historic downtown without dealing with some of the traffic and parking that come with popular fall weekends.

Why Take the Train to Jim Thorpe?

One of the biggest advantages is simple: you do not have to drive into Jim Thorpe during one of its busiest seasons.

Fall is a popular time to visit. Downtown parking is limited, and the local tourism office recommends planning ahead for busy fall weekends. Arriving by train eliminates that part of the day.

However, I think the bigger reason to take the train is the experience itself.

Instead of spending your drive watching traffic, you can watch Pennsylvania scenery pass outside the window. As you get closer to Jim Thorpe, the surrounding mountains and Lehigh Gorge make it feel like the trip has already begun.

It turns a day trip into a small adventure.

Know the Difference Between the Trains

This can be confusing when you first start planning. There are trains that take you to Jim Thorpe, and there is also the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway that leaves from Jim Thorpe.

Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad operates seasonal passenger excursions that bring visitors into Jim Thorpe for the day. Depending on the excursion and date, trains may depart from Reading, Port Clinton, Pittston or Penobscot. Schedules vary throughout the year.

Once you are in Jim Thorpe, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers a separate scenic train experience that travels through the gorge and returns to Jim Thorpe.

You do not have to take both.

If your main goal is exploring Jim Thorpe, be careful about adding another train ride to a limited layover. Pay close attention to the departure times so you do not miss your train home.

Decide What You Want to Do Before You Arrive

One of the easiest mistakes to make is stepping off the train without a plan.

Jim Thorpe looks small on a map, but there is more to see than you can comfortably fit into a few hours. I would choose:

  1. One attraction you really want to visit
  2. Time to walk through downtown
  3. A place or type of food you want to try
  4. Some unplanned time to explore

That is enough. Trying to fit every museum, shop, train ride and historic site into one afternoon can turn a relaxing train trip into a race against the clock.

Walk Broadway and Explore Downtown

You do not necessarily need a complicated itinerary. Walking around Jim Thorpe is part of the experience.

Broadway and the surrounding historic streets are lined with restaurants, shops, galleries and historic buildings. The town’s railroad, canal and coal history can be seen throughout the area.

Give yourself permission to wander into a store that looks interesting or stop when you see a good view. That is often where the memorable parts of a day trip happen.

Visit One Historic Attraction

If you enjoy history, choose at least one attraction before your trip.

The Asa Packer Mansion is one of Jim Thorpe’s best-known historic sites. The mansion was built in 1861 and was the home of Asa Packer, who built the Lehigh Valley Railroad and founded Lehigh University.

Another option is the Old Jail Museum, which shares part of the area’s coal-mining and Molly Maguires history.

The Mauch Chunk Museum & Cultural Center is another choice if you want to understand more about the history of the town that was once called Mauch Chunk.

You probably do not need to visit all three during a train layover. Pick the one that sounds most interesting to you.

Leave Time to Eat

Do not schedule every minute of your visit.

Jim Thorpe has restaurants and cafés throughout downtown, but you may encounter lines or waits during busy fall weekends. I would leave more time for lunch than you think you need.

Another option is to eat something small and spend more of your limited time walking around town. The right choice depends on whether food is an important part of your day or whether you would rather spend that time sightseeing.

Expect Hills

Jim Thorpe is surrounded by mountains, and you will notice that when you start walking. Downtown is compact, but not everything is flat.

Wear comfortable shoes.

This is not the day I would choose shoes just because they look good in fall pictures. You may be walking, climbing hills, standing in lines and getting on and off a train. Comfort wins.

Dress in Layers

Fall weather in Pennsylvania can change considerably during one day.

The morning train ride may feel cool. Walking through town in the afternoon may feel warmer. By the time you board the train home, temperatures may be dropping again.

Layers make the day much easier. A light jacket or sweatshirt that fits into your bag is useful, along with comfortable walking shoes.

I would also bring:

  • Water
  • A small portable phone charger
  • Sunglasses
  • A compact umbrella or rain jacket if rain is possible
  • Only the things you want to carry for several hours

Fall Weekends Are Busy

Jim Thorpe is not a hidden fall destination. People come specifically for the foliage, historic town and train rides.

The official Jim Thorpe Fall Foliage Festival brings additional activity to downtown on selected October weekends. Those can be some of the busiest times to visit.

That does not mean you should avoid fall. It simply means you should arrive expecting other people to have the same idea.

If you prefer fewer crowds, look at train dates outside the main festival weekends.

Taking Kids or Teens to Jim Thorpe by Train

A train trip can work especially well for families because the transportation itself gives the day some structure. You have the ride there, a few hours to explore and the ride home.

With older kids or teens, I would let everyone choose one thing they want to do in town. One person might want to visit the Old Jail Museum, another may want to shop, and someone else may mainly care about finding something good to eat.

Giving everyone a small part in planning usually makes a day trip more interesting than taking the entire family through a long sightseeing checklist.

Do Not Forget When Your Train Leaves

This might be the most important practical tip.

Your return train is not going to wait while you finish shopping.

Check the departure time when you arrive in Jim Thorpe and set an alarm on your phone well before you need to return to the station.

I would plan to be back near the train earlier than necessary instead of spending the last part of the afternoon worrying about whether I am going to make it.

Is Visiting Jim Thorpe by Train Worth It?

For a fall day trip, I think the train is part of what makes the experience interesting.

You are not simply going to Jim Thorpe. You are traveling there by rail, walking through a historic Pennsylvania town surrounded by mountains and fall foliage, and then climbing back aboard for the trip home.

It slows the day down a little, and that fits the way I like to travel.

You do not need to see every attraction. Walk around. Look inside the shops. Learn something about the town. Eat something good. Take pictures. Watch the fall scenery from the train.

Sometimes experiencing a place is better than checking off everything there is to do.
