If your child is competing at the Pennsylvania West Swim Districts at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, you’re in for an exciting weekend of competition. To make the most of your trip, consider these 10 tips, especially if you’re staying in a cozy Airbnb cabin on Lake Erie in nearby Geneva-on-the-Lake. My daughter was lucky enough to quality with her times and compete in the 11-12 age group this year. She went with 7 events and is going to states with 3 of them.
Before You Go:
- Book Accommodations Early – The SPIRE Institute hosts many events. If you want a close hotel book early. We did not and Geneva-on-the-Lake is a great air b n b option that is 15 minutes away.
- Check the Weather – Ohio’s weather in swim season can be unpredictable. Pack layers for varying temperatures, especially if you plan to explore the lakefront in your downtime. You may want to take a walk on the beach and it may be cold in March.
- Know the SPIRE Institute Layout – The SPIRE Institute is a massive facility. Familiarize yourself with parking areas, entrances, and seating arrangements before arrival to reduce stress on meet day. This includes parking. They had a Ninja course that our other daughter enjoyed while she was there.
At the Swim Meet:
- Arrive Early – Parking and entry lines can be long. Give yourself plenty of time to find a spot, get settled, and allow your swimmer to warm up without rushing.
- Bring Essentials – Pack snacks, a refillable water bottle, a comfortable seat cushion, and layers. The pool area is very warm.
- Stay Fueled – While SPIRE has concessions, bringing your own nutritious snacks can help keep energy levels where you want them.
- Bring Something to do – A book, cards, knitting. There will be long periods before events. Enjoy your off time too and enjoy some other races.
After the Meet:
- Relax at the Cabin – A stay at a Lake Erie cabin offers the perfect opportunity to unwind. Enjoy the fresh air, lake views, and perhaps a bonfire to celebrate the day’s races.
- Explore Geneva-on-the-Lake – If you have time, take a stroll along the historic strip, visit a local winery, or check out Geneva State Park for a scenic walk along the shore. Most of the town was closed while we were there in March but it was still fun to take a stroll.
- Plan for Recovery – After a long day at the pool, encourage your swimmer to stretch, hydrate, and get a good night’s sleep to prepare for the next day’s races or the journey home.
Attending the Pennsylvania West Swim Districts at SPIRE is a great experience for both swimmers and their families. With a little preparation and a relaxing stay at an Airbnb cabin on Lake Erie, you can make the most of your trip while supporting your athlete. Enjoy the competition and the beautiful surroundings of Geneva, Ohio!
