That year, back in 1967, the trip took most of the summer. They traveled by truck with a camper top and a travel trailer staying in campgrounds caravanning with a group of extended family. It was a once in a lifetime chance and experience that her parents chose to take back then. Her father once mentioned to her that “you have to see your home state first before you see the rest of the country”. It was a time when both the LP, aka “the mitten”, and UP, aka “the rabbit”, were in their “heyday”, it was the “golden age” when Michigan had wonderfully popular tourist spots and it was an experience like no other. Growing up in Michigan, she experienced all the state has to offer. As an adult, she continued to travel all over the state spending numerous weekends “Up North” in Michigan. During her lifetime, she and her family, traveled many times around the Midwest and over to the east coast, and down south. She made more than 40 trips between Michigan, Ohio, and Florida. Always traveling back to Michigan, she and her husband made several return trips, like “Michigan Snowbirds” and down south to Florida. Eventually, in 2013, they permanently relocated to Florida. To this day, when people ask her where she is from, she holds up her hand, “the Michigan mitten”, to show them from where she originates in Michigan. As the author has stated about her birthplace, the great State of Michigan has a special place in her heart and will always be home to her family. Nowhere else, will you encounter such a unique state on Earth. There is no other place like Michigan.

“Telling stories one page at a time.

My story telling career began when I was in the second grade. I remember walking into a small dark room that had a soft padded cushion that I could kneel down on. Then, suddenly, I heard the opening of a secret panel. I could see a small amount of light, but that was all.

I remembered from my catechism classes that that was my cue: “Bless me father…” And roughly 35 minutes later I walked out of the darkened room.

I recall overhearing a man that was wearing a long black cape (it looked like a cape to me) whispering to one of my teachers: “Now that boy is a storyteller!”

“Hi, everybody! My name is Jason, and I am passionate about traveling and local cuisines. I lived in Asia for many years—primarily in China—and I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel the world and be enveloped in many amazing cultures and food experiences.

I grew up in the northeast part of the U.S., and I eventually found my way to the West Coast after having studied and worked abroad. As an ESL instructor and trainer, I discovered that my passion was to help others utilize their language skills the same way I wished to use mine.

While I wouldn’t consider myself fully “”fluent”” in the language, I studied Mandarin for a few years and can comfortably communicate with others. I believe that food and languages connect people and create a sense of community among them, and I hope that everyone can have the same wonderful travel and dining experiences that I have been able to enjoy throughout the years.”

I’d As a long time listener of audiobooks, I fell in love with being able to escape into a story and get ‘lost’ when I listen to them. That is what I want listeners to feel when they listen to my narration.

I love working from my home studio where all of my audiobooks to date are produced. I enjoy working with self published authors and small presses. I am coached in non-fiction and have a strong interest in historical fiction, children, cosy mystery, romance genres.

Greater Than a Tourist         Greater Than a Tourist: Bar Harbor, Maine

“I was born in a suburb just north of Cincinnati, Ohio and am proud to still call the area my home! I attended the University of Cincinnati and majored in Spanish and Spanish History, and, ironically, my first job out of college was teaching English to non-native speakers – not using my degree at all! However, my company determined that my “”specialty”” was pronunciation – breaking down certain English words in a phonetic way so that they are easily mastered in conversation. I loved my time with my ESL students, and learned so much about language. It was here that I really had to “”polish up”” how I spoke, watching how I enunciated certain words, and so on. Speaking with clarity became a part of my daily routine.

I began reading when I was three. My dad worked long hours, and I was home a lot with my mom, so she was my first audience. I have vivid memories of reading her Are You My Mother? and the Amelia Bedelia books, sounding out words and building a story. I still love to read, and try my best to get in about 70-100 books per year.

I have no formal voice over training, just what I have learned along the way during my time as an ESL teacher and book lover. My favorite books to narrate are non-fiction titles – I like to try and bring life to the subject matter through my intonation and deliverance. Non-fiction can sometimes get a bad rap as being stuffy or boring, so I’m here to help change that 🙂

When I’m not narrating, you can find me spending time with my partner, Armstead; curled up on the couch with my two dogs, Petey and Charlie; or digging into a big warm bowl of Pho, no matter the season. “

Tom Hess

Eat Like a Local

I have narrated numerous ELAL books.

“I am a professional voice artist working in my home-based studio.  I have worked in many genres, including audiobooks (with many titles for CZYK Publishing included), video narration, advertising, and podcasts to name a few.  I am a content creator, producing and hosting multiple YouTube channels, including a Home Improvement/DIY show and a Home Hospitality show featuring cocktails and home entertaining for family and friends. I have produced and hosted a podcast featuring “Eat Like a Local” titles, which highlighted various books in the series.  It’s something that I really enjoyed and would like to revisit again.

I have always been a creative sort and studied Telecommunications (fancy title for TV/Radio) at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.  After that, I proudly served my country in the US Air Force Reserve for 7 years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.  Prior to my foray into the world of voice and content creation, I have had a long and varied work life.  Sadly, life circumstances led me away from my initial path into TV and Radio production.  I have always been a bit of a “jack-of -all-trades” who has basically done every type of job there is.  I have worked in food service and hospitality, retail, security, construction, health and fitness, agriculture, and public service, just to name a few.

I started my ventures into voice and entertainment through a friend’s DJ business.  I entertained at bars, weddings, and halls. Not to age myself, but I remember hosting Karaoke when we had to use a laser disc player with discs the size of old-time vinyl records.  People didn’t really know about Karaoke back then, so many nights it was me in concert.  We were also early pioneers in the field of live trivia contests.  These early jobs were the ember that kept burning in me as I continued through my life until I made the leap into voice and content creation.

Outside of my creative endeavors, my wife Lisa and I enjoy many activities. It may seem strange, but we really enjoy working around the house and yard doing chores and improvements.  We like to travel anywhere warm but enjoy our annual trips to the Bahamas the most.  Aside from that, we mostly enjoy hanging around our home, hanging out with family and friends.
