I was looking for a travel guide that would give me information on Louisiana outside of New Orleans. The options were limited so I thought I would give this a try even though the only other review on here was 2 stars. After reading it I regret my decision and can’t even give it 2 stars.
This book felt like it was written by a 3rd grader. It was only 60 pages with large font size and wide margins, and it was littered with typos – as if it was not even copy edited. I finished the entire book in 20 minutes. The amount of information for each recommendation was extremely thin. It was not organized in any logical manner, such as by city. For many of the attractions the book doesn’t even state which city it is located in. Not worth $12 – don’t waste your time or money.

I am disappointed that this book may be better suited to 8-10 yr olds, if they don’t mind reading book without visuals.

Recently found Greater than a Tourist collection when trying to find a book on Trinidad. The Trinidad book was well written and very informative. This book….essentially tells you to go Google things. Glad I just got it through Unlimited instead of the poor people who paid for this book. Considering it’s written by someone who claims to have grown up on the island (but no longer lives there) I had higher expectations. Pretty sure these aren’t passed by an editor of any sort. Such a letdown.

Bought this travel book (and a few others) for my upcoming vacation trip to Montana this month (June 2021). It has a few unique suggestions about places to visit (e.g., ghost tour and/or overnight prisoner experience in an old prison) and local foods to try (huckleberries, flathead cherries, and mountain oysters- NO THANKS!). But some of the tips are just so-so. For example, it discusses the Glacier Nat’l Park, but it neglects to mention that the road to the sun (the main road through the park) requires both a reservation (very difficult to get unless you plan well in advance) and an entry pass. I’m glad I found that info elsewhere before my trip b/c it would be have been disappointing to drive hours to reach this park only to discover that we didn’t have the req’d reservations to enter.
To be fair, I did like the chapter on the Yellowstone Nat’l Park and its 3 main entrances as well as the explanation of the two types of bears that are frequently seen in MT (Black Bears and Grizzlies). I also liked the chapter on ghost towns to visit. Overall, it was a quick read with at least a few helpful tips about Montana that you might not find elsewhere.

Also, it has a decided right wing conservative feel. Most readers don’t need to know how much he admires the Alaskan Pipeline. We don’t need to see his quotation marks around “Eastern religions” as he describes them dismissively. We don’t need to have exhortations that trapping is a responsible trade, and animal rights activists are “interfering”with someone’s “trade”.
Overall, this guide is marginally useful as an exhibit to an ethnographic study of White mainstream views of Fairbanks and the misguided notion that oil production and gold mining are “good”, because they created economic booms and land development.

This is a different kind of guidebook. First, there are no addresses, hours, or directions for any of the attractions. Of the 50 places mentioned, there are often other attractions embedded within one of the 50 so there are far more than 50 places discussed. This is not at all a bad thing, but an index of locations and attractions would have been a great addition. However, the lack of addresses or an index is not what caused me to give this a three-star review… it’s the lack of proofreading and editing. This book has an abundance of errors. On the first real page you are greeted by this line: “No matter if you’re interests are outdoors…” Others include, “Missouri is famed for being the location of the first ice cream phone.” Another ice cream whoopsie leaves off the letter Y when sharing about “Clementine’s Naugh & Nice Creamery.” The City Museum “boasts a climbing adventure that apex’s to a gutted airplane…” and if you plan to go to the zoo, “they require reservations to be make three weeks in advance.” I could go on (and on), but I think you get the picture. If you are the kind of person who is distracted by the misuse of their/there/they’re, its/it’s, your/you’re, s/’s, and misplaced commas– this is not the book for you. You will be far too distracted by the lack of proofreading and editing to use this book as a go-to guidebook.

The book is 111 pages, of which only 37 are the tips. There is an unnecessary “Bonus Book” of packing tips that takes up 22 pages. The rest are introduction, other lists, stuff. The book is printed on thick newsprint, with no photos and just one small gray-scale map.
The tips about Toulouse are good, though. They cover a lot of places to see, both in Toulouse and around the neighborhood (Carcasonne, Albi). Included are museums, buildings, places to eat, neighborhoods, and a tip on local language. I can see us using this book daily during our stay (planning on 30 days in the Fall).
Improvements needed: open days and times for the museums, locations of the sights, maps, longer explanations of some of the tips (add a bit more history, for example). This series does not have to follow in the style of the “111 Places to See” series (glossy paper, color photos) but more detail would be good. And dump the “packing light” section. How about a tip on using public transport: where to get maps, passes, tickets, etc.
Buy this for the tips, not the other stuff.

It’s a great concept: travel tips from a local resident of your destination. The irony here is that the author lived only briefly in Malaga, and worked in the tourist entertainment industry! So instead of some unpretentious restaurants or obscure sights, you will be directed to some of the most popular tourist traps. There is little here that you would not find in any mainstream tourist guide. In fact, only thirty of the fifty tips even concern Malaga itself; the rest are well-know destinations in the surrounding area. And even the Kindle edition is overpriced: for eight bucks you get the equivalent of a skimpy, unillustrated pamphlet, one-third of which is generic filler about how to pack! Although written in enthusiastic English, this does not seem to be the author’s native language, judging by the awkward and often circuitous prose. Even the most cursory editing could have corrected this, which only adds to the overall impression that this was thrown together mostly for the publisher’s benefit, not the traveler’s. It may not be as pathetic as The Malaga Two-Day Travel Guide, but my unbiased tip would be to avoid both. For about the same price, Footsteps through Malaga and the Insight Explore Andalucia guide are much better value.

I enjoy traveling, and I am familiar with the Lake Tahoe area because we went there quite often when I was a child. I will admit it has been some time since I have been there. While I did like the tips themselves given by someone who knows the area, I thought the book lacked organization, was too short to be genuinely of much help, and was flawed in its basic design.
In terms of organization, there truly is none. This is a pamphlet of 50 random tips. Some are on similar ideas, so it would make sense to group them together. For instance, there are several tips about skiing or what to do in the snow. These would have been great to group together. Instead, there are some at the beginning, and one sneaks it at the end. This book could have been organized in so many different ways: by season, by activity, indoor versus outdoor, things to do in Tahoe itself versus things to do in other cities and towns, etc. To me, too, it felt like there was a bit of cheating to inflate the numbers. For instance, the “castle” of Tahoe is actually given two tips out of the 50, the hidden castle and learning about the castle; those certainly could have been combined into one tip! I also thought that some tips should be grouped together into one recommendation, like all the breweries in a particular town or area. This would have given more space for other tips, of which I know there has to be many because there is so much to do in and around the Tahoe area
The book is shorter than you might think from its number of pages. The text of the tips starts around the 15% mark and actually stops at the 63% point; the rest is a “bonus book” that purports to be about traveling light, but it is more about packing in general and some trip prep. So, only about half of the book is tips about Tahoe.
To me, there is an inherent flaw in the design of this book. Namely, it really revolves just around these 50 poorly organized tips. There’s a very brief opening paragraph, but that is the extent of the “orientation” you get to the area. So I found it lacking a true orientation to the area, which I think is really necessary for a book like this. Luckily, I know the area because I have visited it so many times, but I can imagine that a tourist from another state or country might find themselves scratching their heads while trying to read this book. If the tips had been organized, they could have had header sections that described more generalities about the combined topics before diving into the details. Orienting, overarching information grounds the reader so he or she can better take in the information.
The book doesn’t have any pictures of the area. I think photos are an essential part of any travel book. Armchair travelers like to imagine the places they read about, perhaps envisioning themselves there; photographs scratch that itch.
The book, or at least the ARC version of the book I received, is full of issues with grammar, punctuation, usage, and formatting. In one of the first tips, Tahoe itself was not capitalized! There were other issues with capitalization and spelling, even of some business names. I’m hoping this has been cleared up for publication. The most crucial mistakes were made after the 10% mark, so I cannot check on Amazon to see if these have been corrected.
I wanted to like this book because I am fascinated by the idea of the series, learning more about a place from a local. (And arguably, the author of this book may not be considered a local as she is not a permanent resident.) I am mostly an armchair traveler who does travel on occasion. I was hoping to find a series that I could count on for cool information about other places I might travel. But I do not think that these books, if this is a fair sample, would serve that function. Unless you have other books or information about the areas covered in this series, you would most likely find yourself more confused than enlightened by reading this book.

There aren’t very many guidebooks for Albania, so I thought I’d try this one. Sorry, but I’m disappointed by it.
I’m concerned about the value of this series of books. Apparently, the qualification for authoring a book in the series is that you have to have lived in an area for more than three months. That’s just not enough time to gain expertise about an area. The last third of the book consists of “Bonus tips” not particular to Albania, and presumably shared among the other books in the series. These tips are things you already know, like, pack a minimum number of bags, and your passport is an essential travel item.
As for the Albania-specific items, much of the information is not very helpful. For example, the book says you can get to Albania via car, bus, or plane. True enough, but no real details are provided. The Wikitravel page for Albania has much more detailed information on that topic. There’s a section about watching movies in Albania, which states “We have some great cinemas here”. Well, OK, I’d expect there to be movie theaters, but it might be more interesting to learn about movies filmed in Albania. In another section, you learn that “there are plenty of night clubs where you can drink and dance”. Sure, but tell me something I don’t know.
There are some useful nuggets of information about various sites and activities. The list is hardly comprehensive, though. I’ll need other sources of information for my upcoming Albania trip.

I was hopeful that this little book would have some tidbits of knowledge about Puerto Rico for my family’s first trip there in a couple of weeks — the kind of insight that the book promises. Unfortunately, much of the information contained in the book could literally apply to anywhere, and if you have ever travelled outside of your home state there’s not much for you. In fact, better information could be gleaned from a few minutes perusing the Puerto Rico pages on Trip Advisor. Moreover, typos abound — the book does not look like it was edited very thoroughly. And finally, the page count of this book is very misleading — the actual content doesn’t start for over 20 pages, and the last 30 pages is a guess essay about what to pack when you travel (which can also be applied to anywhere, but is mostly common sense).

I purchased this book for my boyfriend before a planned trip. I was hoping it would provide some unique/helpful info. Unfortunately it feels more like half thought through, unedited collections of random info. Half of the book lists out sites to visit but there are no maps to help plan a route or even give you an idea where the places are in the state (there are pictures early in the book- so not a map could easily have been included). The second half of the book is supposed to be travel tips, but feels like useless tips to make the book a few pages longer. The pages are printed crooked and in the short bit I read I found a pretty obvious punctuation error making it feel like I spent more time reading it than any editor. Go on Yelp or TripAdvisor and save a few $.

I am disappointed in this book. It isn’t what I thought it would be. The descriptions of places to visit are very short—one paragraph—and while the website says it doesn’t list “exact” addresses or store hours, the truth is that it doesn’t list these at all. I guess the reader has to look up specific information about these places online or in another book, which defeats the purpose of buying it. Nor is there a map, which would have been helpful. The book is short and the print is large, so there isn’t much content in it. I was hoping to use this on an upcoming trip but It isn’t going to be much help. I feel like I wasted my money.

What a waste of money. This is a simple book. Literally. It was written by someone who has absolutely no idea what real travellers want. Each page has about 1/2 of text in large font. The rest is blank. No photos, no maps, nothing. It could have been written by someone in primary school, it has so little information. What is there can be easily found on the internet, there’s nothing “local” about any of it.

This book has no photos. Half of the book is general travel tips (what to pack).
As a previous review suggested: a MAP would be a welcome addition to this guide. Seeing as how some of the names of places mentioned in the book are a mystery to Google (thank you multiple ways of spelling the same Greek word) and there is very VERY vague reference on how to find them there are a few that I have no idea if they still exist or that they just go by a different name.

I found this book to be helpful in planning our visit to Crete but it has its limitations. Absence of a map with locations numbered to match the list is one. Such a map would help to focus the reader on where they may wish to travel (in Chania city or elsewhere in the province). The second is the spelling of places, some of which do not align with Google searches. Example #28 Walk Around the Lively Street of Daliani. On Google maps this street is Chatzimichali Ntaliani. There are a number of similar examples; alternative spellings would be helpful to avoid confusion.
There are a number of clever ideas that will help make the visit feel a bit less touristy.

What a wonderfully delightful book! Not only is it written like a pro, but it is not just a book. It’s a script. Sophie Foreman has infused her own personality into every section, and even though everything is grammatically correct, it has a casual, friendly manner to it that is so necessary to make the reader feel that the author is speaking directly to them.
London is my absolutely favourite city. When I went there, I felt as though I was finally back home. I knew instinctively where everything was. I visited many of the places she mentioned, but most of them were new to me. She has written a very comprehensive account of everything a tourist would want to see and experience in the city.

This is awful I really question whether this person has even been in he LG area. It is such an unclear book that if you didn’t know better you would be confused. A few points, as there are far too many obvious mistakes to detail. First, she goes from the village of LG to the entire area that is around the lake itself. Confusing. The hotels mentioned are all the obviou hi-brow ones that would come up on Google. The charm of LG is that there are wonderful affordable rustic camp cabins/clean kitsch motels/hidden away family owned vintage cabin motels. Same with dining; anybody who rec. Mr. Browns at The Sagamore has not worked there or known someone who has. She only hits the fancy no brainer places via Google. Problem with hat is a lot of them are expensive and not good. One of the oldest running orig. A&W drive ups is there, with the orig. menu. Coffee places are everywhere so….Yes we have no frills coffee too, lol. There are many great obvious places to eat in the area IE, Lucilles’ and Franks Pizza, a legend. There is also a historical diner, not mentioned and great hole in the wall places. Why you would find LG’s grocery stoeas a negative is beyond me. It is a great little vintage store, and it isn’t tiny. Also you would never send anyone from LG to Walmart in Ti to shop. Go South, the Glens Falls/Queensbury area is full of them and much closer without the very scary road situation. Shopping; the factory outlets are wonderful. Yes crowded, why is the question, lol. You pick a side and park and walk and shop then you do the other side. Alot of great kitschy stores in LG village. The Candy shop is great. Several bakeries in the area. Several great things hidden here and there that Google doesnt know. You don’t need to like sports, lol. One more thing. The cruises are usually beautiful sunset dinner cruises or lovey brunch ones. The food/scenery/live music are all great and many many many locals go on them. FAIL! This is a google search book. I am glad it was free. Also the old drive-in is a must!
